Villafranca del Bierzo

The Bierza region is also known for wines. Villafranca del Bierzo is a lovely small town with a number of churches which we didn’t visit. We got to town just as the weekly market was breaking up.

We walked across the old bridge to find Casa Mendez where we both had big salads for dinner. Generally you have to get the whole 3 course menu del dia, which is too much. Crossing the bridge we saw some men in the park below playing bocci ball or some version of it. Ed, I wonder if it’s like the French version you play.

Our pension was beautifully done. It looked like a very nice B & B you might fine in New England or the South.

The name was Las Donas del Portazago. When I asked what it meant she explained that in the old days it’s location at the end of the bridge was where some women collected tolls for crossing the bridge. But I’m guessing that it probably came from a time before the bridge when pilgrims were ‘portaged’ across the river.
